Correcting Low Total Alkalinity: Using an Alkalinity Increaser

If your testing reveals low Total Alkalinity, the solution is typically straightforward: add an Alkalinity Increaser. This product is essentially sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) formulated for pools. It’s a highly effective and safe way to raise TA without significantly impacting pH immediately.

How to use an Alkalinity Increaser:

1. Calculate the Dose: Always refer to the product’s instructions for the correct dosage based on your pool’s volume and current TA reading. Most products will provide a chart or formula.
2. Preparation: For best results, dissolve the required amount of alkalinity incrementer in a bucket of pool water first. This prevents the powder from clumping and allows for more even distribution.
3. Application: With your pool pump running, slowly pour the dissolved solution into the deep end of your pool, or broadcast it over a wide area to ensure even dispersion. Avoid dumping it all in one spot.
4. Circulation: Allow the pool to circulate for several hours (at least 6-8, or overnight) to fully distribute the product.
5. Re-Test: After sufficient circulation, re-test your TA levels. It may take a couple of days and additional small doses to reach the ideal range. If pH rises too much, you may need to add a small amount of pH reducer after TA is stabilized.
